Summer time is quick approaching and with it comes Florida’s undeniable heat. So naturally what do we do? Take to the nearest pool to cool off and enjoy the water. Why not take this to another level? Aquatic fitness has amazing health benefits that all types of people can take advantage of. With water resistance being approximately 12 times more than air, it is a beneficial workout environment that can also be enjoyable. Working out in the water provides great non-impact movements that people with arthritis, joint pain, or those recovering from injury can benefit from. One’s flexibility is can also be improved by exercising in the water. Performing stretches in the water allows a greater range of motion because the effects of gravity are lessened. Remember however that while in the water, your heart rate will decrease approximately 17 beats per minute. Therefore monitoring heart rate throughout the workout is necessary to make sure you are not exercising too strenuously.
If you’re looking for direction, there are two types of classes that are available: shallow, where the water level is chest height and you can stand on the pool floor, and deep, where one cannot touch the floor and must stay elevated by the various exercises given. If you decide to participate in an aquatics class, make sure you search around to find the right one that is appropriate with your fitness level. Many popular group exercise classes are being converted to an aquatic format, like water yoga and hydro-bike classes. Adding a little H20 to your workout may be the best way to keep you involved and interested in your fitness regimen this summer.
