African Diasporan Arts

Syllabus I Recommended Research Topics I Images


GOALS:

  1. To appreciate the history and aesthetics of traditional African arts.

  2. To understand the continuities between traditional African arts and the art of the African Diaspora (the influence of traditional African cultures in the Americans).

  3. To understand anthropological, art historical, and folklore theories and methods for analyzing the arts of the African Diaspora.

  4. To appreciate the religious basis for African Diasporan Arts.



Requirements:

  1. Attendance at all lectures; ONLY two absences allowed. After two absences, bring a Doctor's note.

  2. Participation in class discussions.

  3. Spiral notebook for taking notes; 3 ring notebook for storing handouts.

  4. Required text:

  5. Three quizzes, one Final Exam, two sets of maps, two 4 page research reports or art projects, one class presentation.
