Becoming a UWC Consultant

About the University Writing Center
The University Writing Center (UWC) provides a peer review service for all undergraduate and graduate writing at UCF. This includes assigned writing for classes in every discipline and out-of-class writing such as scholarship application essays, business memos, etc. UWC writing consultants work individually with students at any stage of the writing process from planning to organizing to editing. We help with writer’s block and collaborative writing such as group research projects. In addition, the UWC offers online services, special topic workshops, and CLAST preparation.
Writing Consultant Job Description

Writing consultants spend 4-20 hours/week in the UWC working one-on-one with clients on an appointment basis. Consultants may give presentations about the UWC, lead special topic workshops, work with small group projects, develop pedagogical or publicity materials, and consult with clients via the Internet.

Every consultant is required to attend initial training when first hired and weekly seminars throughout the semester. Participation in an online discussion and occasional professional development projects are also required.

Good communication skills are essential for this job, and all candidates must be interested in learning more about writing. Candidates must be able to think critically, ask good questions, and demonstrate a sincere interest in the writing of other students. Because the UWC is not a remedial service, consultants must be able to work with students at all levels in all disciplines.

Prerequisites for Writing Consultants

  • ALL majors accepted—students from a variety of backgrounds sought
  • 3.0 GPA
  • currently enrolled at UCF (full-time or part-time)
  • junior standing or above
  • good oral and written communication skills
  • good interpersonal skills
Candidates are not expected to be perfect writers with an encyclopedic knowledge of grammar. “Pretty good” writers with excellent interpersonal skills are preferred over fabulous writers who will condescend to our clientele.
Other Information

Undergraduates will be paid $7.50/hour with a possible raise to $8.00/hour. Graduate students will be paid $10/hour. All writing consultants must work at least 4 hours/week starting the first day of classes through the end of finals. Consultants may be required to work evenings and weekends. Work Study students are welcome to apply as well.

Candidates must submit a completed application form (available at the UWC), a writing sample, a recommendation from a faculty member, and 1-2 references.

Writing consultants are usually hired prior to the end of spring semester to start the following fall; no new consultants are hired to start summer semester. For more information, contact UWC Coordinator Anastasia Bojanowski at abojanow@mail.ucf.edu or call 407-882-0076.
