Hi, I'm Georgie, and I'm a graduate student in Literary Nonfiction at UCF. I also got my Bachelor's here in English/Creative Writing. It is my goal to become a college professor, and the first step toward achieving this goal was taken when I began working at the University Writing Center. I enjoy working with students very much-from freshmen away from home for the first time to graduate students or middle-aged men and women finally returning for a long-coveted degree, every person that I meet has learned something important. This something is often shared with me during the course of a consultation. In addition, I often have the privilege of being a stepping stone in their learning process. Many clients come in because they don't know what to write about or need to expand on their ideas. The fact that these clients expect inspiration from me keeps me constantly on my toes, constantly questioning events and thoughts. Why college students? I feel that college students listen in a way that other students don't. Maybe it's because they are paying for their education themselves. Maybe it's because their parents are calling every night to remind them of who is paying for their education. Maybe it's being surrounded by people who, like me, cannot wait to hear what the next person they talk to will say, what secret will be revealed in the context of an ordinary conversation. The opportunity to talk to and learn from others is endless in the context that a university provides. A friend once said to me that in order to be interesting someone must be interested. I am interested in everything my clients have to say, and I hope I can show them that writing can be interesting, as well. |
