On Writing

My high school journalism teacher started her class each fall by telling budding cub reporters that if they wanted to write well they had to read.  “Read trashy novels, if you must,” she said. “Eventually you will get tired of them and read something better.”

What a budding writer learns from reading is the flow and “sound” of good writing. A piece of good writing should lead the reader smoothly from one idea to another without jarring transitions. Fiction, nonfiction, a dissertation, a love letter, the format does not matter. The job of a writer is to take the reader on a seamless journey that introduces new information, confirms or challenges old convictions, and opens the door to fresh insights.
