Avoiding Plagiarism: Other Resources
The UCF Office of Student Conduct: In cases of plagiarism for first-time offenders, the OSC offers a two-hour course through the Philosophy department entitled "Ethical Issues in Academic Dishonesty." The course is available for students who have been formally or informally referred to the OSC, and is offered twice a semester. For more information, see the course webpage (run by Dr. Stanlick) and the OCS website.
Strategies for Teaching with Online Tools (Plagiarism): on this site, Nick Carbone, a New Media Consultant for Bedford/St. Martin's, provides useful ideas for making the potential for plagiarism in your class "vanishingly thin."
Plagiarism and the Web: a good site that offers practical suggestions to discourage plagiarism before it appears. Also includes a list of useful links.
Deterring Plagiarism: Some Strategies: assembled by Margaret Proctor at the University of Toronto, this site gives specific advice about explaining instructor expectations and judging writing process as well as the product.
Plagiarism: A Good Practice: an fairly in-depth study that includes a section on "Designing Out Opportunities for Plagiarism." By Jude Carroll and Jon Appleton.
Anti-Plagiarism Strategies for Research Papers: a site by teacher and writer Robert Harris that offers a lot of good advice for designing assignments that deter plagiarism.
"e-cheating: Combatting a 21st Century Challenge," by Kim McMurtry: a useful article that explores student plagiarism and the Internet. The author discusses term paper mills, cutting-and-pasting from websites, and electronic sharing of papers, and includes pointers for identifying and discouraging this practice.
