Technical Writing Assignments that Work

Chapter Presentations

(contributed by Amber Goldberg)

Assignment

In groups, you will all present a chapter (or chapters) from the textbook to the class. Your job in this assignment is to act as the teacher. You should present the information in a way that your colleagues will gain insight into the topic. Your presentation should serve as a substitute for reading the material but it should not be a simple recitation of the textbook. Try to use illustrations or examples to demonstrate the information as opposed to summarizing it.

Put yourself in the position of teacher but remember what it is like to be the student. Try to present the information in a way that will keep the audience's attention.

For each presentation you must:

  • Present the information in the textbook without simply reciting it.
  • Find two outside sources on the same topic and include some information from each one. (Outside sources can be from the Internet but should have some credibility, i.e., they should not be one person's personal web page.)
  • Use visual aids. (You have the option of using the document camera or PowerPoint.)
  • Prepare a handout covering the most important information. (This should be at least one page and no more than one double-sided page.)

You are responsible for making copies for the class (there are 31 students). Each group member must speak in the presentation. Presentations should be between 20 and 30 minutes. You are welcome to include a participation section, where you ask your colleagues to participate in the presentation in some way; however, this should not take the place of the presentation. If you can devise a short exercise that will demonstrate the information, then include the exercise.

Grading Criteria

You will be given a group grade for this presentation. See the table below for specific criteria. Hand in page two before the presentation (one per group). Fill in the chapter information and the group members' names. This page will be returned to you with your grade.
