| Personal Perspective and Voice | |

Background You’ve all written a "personal essay" in the past, probably most recently in a college composition course. This sort of essay deals with narrating or describing an experience, event, place, or person, using vivid details in the process. The Personal Perspective and Voice essay for this course uses this essay as a basis, but goes beyond simple narration and description to reach larger conclusions and viewpoints supported by the specific perspective presented in the essay. This kind of essay is often guided by a controlling metaphor, which guides the reader towards the writer’s point. |

Metaphors are generally thought of us devices used by writers to compare things, but in a larger sense, reality as we know it is defined by metaphor (or simile). What does this mean? Well, think about the example of solving an algebra problem. Depending on the metaphor we use, we can govern how people view this idea. For instance,
