Expository Writing Assignments that Work

Personal Perspective and Voice

(contributed by Darren Crovitz)

Background

You’ve all written a "personal essay" in the past, probably most recently in a college composition course. This sort of essay deals with narrating or describing an experience, event, place, or person, using vivid details in the process.

The Personal Perspective and Voice essay for this course uses this essay as a basis, but goes beyond simple narration and description to reach larger conclusions and viewpoints supported by the specific perspective presented in the essay. This kind of essay is often guided by a controlling metaphor, which guides the reader towards the writer’s point.

Metaphors are generally thought of us devices used by writers to compare things, but in a larger sense, reality as we know it is defined by metaphor (or simile). What does this mean? Well, think about the example of solving an algebra problem. Depending on the metaphor we use, we can govern how people view this idea. For instance,

Solving an algebra problem is like building a bridge.

Solving an algebra problem is like marching in military parade.

Solving an algebra problem is like digging a thorn out of your flesh.

Obviously, the comparison we use will define our understanding of the reality of working an algebra problem. Here’s another very broad example:

America is a melting pot.

America is a patchwork quilt.

America is a crucible.

Each of these presents a very different understanding of the concept of America.

Assignment:
Write a 1200-1600 word essay that uses personal voice, description, interpretive explanation, and a controlling metaphor to guide the reader through a deeper understanding of a particular place, thing, or concept.

Purpose:
To master the use of metaphor and voice in guiding understanding and perspective

Suggested Process:

  1. Choose a focus…some place, thing, or experience that is particularly vivid to you
  2. Consider a guiding metaphor for your topic
  3. Draft your essay so that individual sections serve to support and illuminate your comparison
  4. Offer very precise and vivid sensory description
  5. Establish a tone appropriate for your focus and metaphor
  6. Conclude your observation and analysis in memorable form
