Assignment

Write a 1000-1250 word (four or five pages) essay that explores a UCF-related problem or issue. You will define the overall problem, conduct both primary and field research (using interviews, planned observations, surveys, and other techniques), develop a proposal justifying further investigation, and test possible solutions. This is an inductive inquiry, which means you will draw conclusions from facts and observations. Your audience for this essay is the UCF/local Orlando community.

This essay is also collaborative; you will work together in a small group on all stages of its development. The group will complete and turn in one essay; individual members should keep copies of all written material in their portfolios.

Each group will be responsible for submitting an approved focus for their investigation. Some possible areas for investigation will be discussed in class; groups may choose a specific problem from this list, or develop their own topic.

Suggested Structure:

    • Introduce the problem: What is it? How did it arise? Who does it affect? (This can be explored through traditional background research and field investigation)
    • Analyze the reasons for the problem: What are the different perspectives on the issue? What are the opposing views? (Field research will be very useful here)
    • Explain the importance of further investigation: Why should people care?
    • Propose possible solutions: What are the pros and cons of these solutions? Are they fair and realistic? How will different groups react to each? (Again, field research might be effective here)

Suggested Plan for Group Progress:

    • Make a schedule for meeting and working on the essay, and stick to it.
    • Stay in contact (email might be effective) about all aspects of the work
    • Make sure each group member understands his or her role and is contributing to the group's progress
    • Plan field research carefully by developing materials (surveys, polls, questionnaires, interview questions, and observation goals) beforehand and in detail
    • Meet often to craft the actual essay
    • Discuss revisions and improvements as a group
