Welcome to the UWC at UCF.

The UWC is a free service offered to all UCF students. The UWC has a two-part mission. Before planning your visit you may want to read our scheduling policies.

To help writers improve their writing:

The University Writing Center helps foster the community of scholarship and shared leadership at UCF through peer consulting, a form of collaborative learning which involves students in each other’s intellectual and academic development. Peer consulting applies two well-known educational principles:

  • We sometimes learn things from each other that resist the direct instruction of classroom teachers.
  • When we teach others, we sometimes learn more than those we teach.

In the UWC, students help each other analyze the rhetorical demands of a writing task; understand the material to be written; plan, organize, revise, and edit papers; design oral presentations; overcome writer’s block; and develop critical thinking skills. Students create a committed and caring writer’s community in the UWC, which helps them achieve excellence in their writing both in and out of class.

To promote writing as a means of learning:

Through collaboration with the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning, Women’s Studies, Human Resources, Diversity Initiatives, and other UCF programs, the UWC provides support for faculty and staff who use writing at UCF. We offer consultations and handouts for UCF faculty and staff.
