Average Temperature
Lesson Plan
Algebra 1 Level

Objective:The student will manipulate data gathered using temperature probe to compare the temperature of cold water, hot water, and the combination of both.

Engage: Discuss with students the procedures involved in manipulating data in the CFX-9850G.
Discuss procedures for averaging.

Explore:
Students will take data and enter it into the List mode. Have students copy data from list to list simultaneously. Have students find average value for any single list of data.

Explain: Compare student results.
Review correct procedures and answer questions.

Elaborate: Complete activity using the EA-100 and CFX-9850G.

Equipment
1 empty cup
2 cups of water 1 hot (not boiling) and 1 cold (no ice)
2 EA-100s
CFX-9850G
2 temperature probes
stopwatch/ timer/ alarm
data communication cable
  1. Perform the experiment as follows:
  2. Retrieve the data from the EA-100:
    a. Connect EA-100 to CFX-9850G using the data communication link.
    b. Turn on CFX-9850G and choose Run (1) from the menu.
    c. Press SHIFT VARS {PRGM}
    d. Press F6 (>) , then I/O {F4}
    e. Press Recu (F4) {Receive( }
    f. Press OPTN, List {F1}, List {F1} ,1, close Parenthesis { ) }
    g. Press SHIFT EXE { }
    h. Press Recu (F4) {Receive( }
    i. Press OPTN, List {F1}, List {F1} ,2, close Parenthesis { ) }
    j. Press EXE
  3. The data should now be listed in List 1 and List 2
    .
  4. Go to the Main Menu and choose List (4)
    a. Cursor across the top of the screen, highlighting List 5
    b. Press OPTN , List {F1}, List {F1}, 1 , EXE This will copy the data in List 1 to List 5.
    c. Cursor across the top of the screen, highlighting List 6
    d. Press OPTN , List {F1}, List {F1}, 2 , EXE This will copy the data in List 2 to List 6.
  5. Repeat Step 2- ONLY. This will enter the data from the second EA-100 to List 1 and List 2.
  6. Go to the Main Menu and choose List (4)
    k. Cursor across the top of the screen, highlighting List 3
    l. Press OPTN , List {F1}, List {F1}, 1 , EXE This will copy the data in List 1 to List 3.
    m. Cursor across the top of the screen, highlighting List 4
    n. Press OPTN , List {F1}, List {F1}, 2 , EXE This will copy the data in List 2 to List 4.
  7. Now data is stored in Lists 3 - 6.
  8. Put one probe into the empty cup
  9. Pour the hot and cold water into the empty cup.
  10. Repeat procedure for manually collecting and retrieving data with the EA-100 and CFX-9850G.

    Evaluate: For the next part of the procedure you will be operating in the LIST menu. Have students find the average temperature for each list of data (List 2,List 4, List 6.) Compare answers with other classmates. Discuss the results as a class. Further evaluation could include finding averages of other types of data.
