ABOUT THE UCF COMPUTER USERS GROUP ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In "UCF Computer Users Group" the operating word is "Users". It is not just for students of computer science, but for students in any academic field who want to explore ways that computer technology can enhance their studies, empower their personal lives, and benefit their future career goals. The UCF-CUG is chartered as a student organization, but welcomes interested faculty, administration, and staff too. The UCF-CUG was conceived as a blanket organization under which people with interests in different aspects of computing could form Special Interest Groups, or SIG's, The UCF-CUG functions as a forum and a communication tool utilizing the campus computer network for sending electronic messages ("e.mail"), posting information bulletins, and distributing the UCF-CUG electronic newsletter "E.News" One of the key elements of the UCF-CUG is student-to-student help with computing. CUG-HELP is an automatic e.mail program (called a "listserv" or "list") which e.mails questions about computing to a network of CUG volunteers who will try to provide answers. This is a demonstration of the true power of "networking". CUG also maintains a section of the Knight Information System (KIS), an online system of information organized in directories (called a "gopher"). The CUG Gopher contains information about the CUG SIG's, a Reading Room, utilities for searching the Internet for information, and Question and Answer files about the Internet for both beginners and experienced users. Official membership in the UCF Computer Users Group is limited to currently enrolled UCF students in good standing. However, subscription to the UCF-CUG electronic mailing list is open to all. Complete information about UCF-CUG can be found on the KIS Gopher, or the UCF-CUG HyperText Homepage on World-Wide-Web.
