  1. Friendly Warning: The Final Exam for this course is scheduled for Tuesday, 28 April 2009, at 10:00 am - 12:50 pm.
  2. Friendly Warning: The Listening Quiz # 2 will be given at the beginning of the final exam period next Tuesday (28 April 2009).
  3. Review sheets and PowerPoints are now posted for all class meetings of this past semester.
  4. Be alert for one or more eCommunity emails from me relating to your Test #2 (and how to get your copy back before the final) and details on what the Listening Quiz # 2 includes, etc.

  1. Continue reading about the music of the Sub-Saharan areas of Africa in Chapter 7.

  2. Friendly Warning: We will have a multi-chapter test on Japan, the Middle East and Indonesia on Thursday, 16 April 09. Review materials & PowerPoints are posted for all three chapters.

9 APR 09 (THURS)

  1. On Tuesday, we begin looking at music of the Sub-Saharan areas of Africa. Begin reading Chapter 7.
  2. Finish reading about the music of Indonesia in Chapter 6, pp. 160-181. Look in particular for information on how gamelan pieces are organized (the three layers) and the types of events that use gamelans.
  3. Friendly Warning: We will have a multi-chapter test on Japan, the Middle East and Indonesia on Thursday, 16 April 09. Review materials & PowerPoints are posted for all three chapters.
  4. Anyone who was unable to attend any of the Kodo concerts may earn extra credit for a self-devised project, which I must approve by this coming Friday. See the course web page for additional information.

  1. Continue reading Chapter 5 on the Music of Japan. Look especially for information on the three theater traditions that use music.
  2. PowerPoint slides have now been posted for the first classes on Japanese music. Do use the links to YouTube excerpts to actaully hear the sounds described in the book.
  3. Videos used in class on Thursday (26 Feb 09) have been returned to the library. Anyone who wishes to view these again, or moreextensively will find the call nos. on the "Reserve and Supplement" web page.
  4. As announced in class today, extra credit will be offered to anyone who attends (and writes about) Kodo, the Japanese percussion group that is touring through Florida next week and beyond. See the link on the course home page to Kodo's own web site for specifics on when and where they are performing. More on how to earn EC in next class.

  2. As announced in the previous class, you should begin reading Chapter 5 on the Music of Japan, for today and after the upcoming test.

17 FEB 09 (TUES)

  1. Friendly Reminder: There will be a test on Chapters 1 and 2 next Tuesday, 24 Feb 09. See the course web site for review sheets.
  2. We are now finished with Chapter 2 on the music of India.
  3. A set of PowerPoint slides related to today's class has been posted.
  4. As announced in class today, we will make a slight change in the schedule of readings, etc. Rather than continue directly through the book, begin reading Chapter 5 on the Music of Japan.

12 FEB 09 (THURS)

  1. Finish reading Chapter 2 on the music of India. Tuesday should be the final day on India.
  2. A set of PowerPoint slides related to today's class has been posted. Note the slide with links to YouTube videos of improvisations, which you should watch as additional examples of what you saw in class.
  3. The First major Test (on Chapter 1 and 2) will be rescheduled to Tuesday, 24 February 09, during your normal class time. Watch for an announcement about review sheets, etc.

10 FEB 09 (TUES)

  1. Continue reading Chapter 2 on the music of India. Beyond perforamnce itself, look for information on how music is taught, and on the cultural background of Indian music.
  2. A set of PowerPoint slides related to today's class has been posted. Note the slide with links to YouTube videos of improvisations, which you should watch as additional examples of what you saw in class.

5 FEB 09 (THURS)

  1. Continue reading Chapter 2 on the music of India. Beyond information on instruments and how improvisation is done, look for specific information on "Raga" and "Tala" in Indian music.

3 FEB 09 (TUES)

  1. Anyone who did not take the Terminology Quiz and is entitled to a make-up quiz (see the syllabus for legitimate excuses) should contact me ASAP. For the rest, who did take the quiz, I will begin grading those items and should be done within a week or so.
  2. See the PowerPoint slides posted for today's class for pictures of Indian musical instruments.
  3. Continue reading Chapter 2 on the music of India. In addition to information on instruments, look for descriptions of how Indian improvisation is done.

29 JAN 09 (Thurs)

  1. REMINDER: The Terminology Quiz will be held on TUESDAY, 3 February 09, at the beginning of the class meeting. This differs from the tentative schedule page.
  2. A review sheet for Music Terminology has been posted on the course web site. Use it to guide your preparations for the upcoming quiz.
  3. We will continue moving forward after the quiz on Tuesday, so continue reading Chapter 2 on the music of India. Look especially at the beginning of the chapter, how concerts are given, and information on instruments.

27 JAN 09 (Tues)

  1. For background information on "India," look at the CIA "World Factbook" (follow the link on the course homepage, corrected as of today). Who lives there, what are their lives like, what are the historical, political, religious, economic circumstances, etc., that define this country?
  2. For Thursday, begin reading Chapter 2 on "India." Look especially at the opening section and how the author describes his arrival in India, his first concert, etc.
  3. Finish reading Nettl, Chapter 1.
