Home page of the largest library and largest music library in the world. Search its catalog via the link near the top of the page.
Doctoral Dissertations in Music On-Line
A searchable index of doctoral dissertations written in the fields of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. Although primarily an index of American dissertations, it also includes many of the more recent European dissertations.
IMSLP Petrucci Music Library
The "International Music Score Library Project" is a wiki site that offers access to scores, parts, recordings and other information related chiefly to art music in the publich domain.
The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music at the Johns Hopkins University
"The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music consists of over 29,000 pieces of American popular music. The collection spans the years 1780 to 1980, but its strength is its throrough documentation of nineteenth-century America through popular music." (From "The History of the Collection")
The MTT Files
A series of one-hour radio broadcasts by Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony, on a variety of topics. Programs 2 and 3 are entitled "What Does American Sound Like?"

Useful Websites for Gershwin

The Official Website of George & Ira Gershwin
An authoritative web site that includes historical background, sound files, and even downloadable sheet music for the Gershwins.
"Parlor Songs"
A website maintained by "The Parlor Songs Association, Inc.," a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of popular sheet music from the 1800s to about 1920. Look to the left menu for links to many useful web pages, include biographies of many songwriters and free access to back issues of the organization's publications.
Walter Donaldson - Official Web site
A website maintained by Donaldson music, with information on one of the most successful composers of popular sheet music in the era 1900-1920. Use the "Jukebox" link (and "select a genre") to hear streaming examples of Donaldson's songs, many of which have become "standards."
The Red Hot Jazz Archive
A web site devoted to "The History of Jazz before 1930," with a vast array of information on the pioneers or jazz. Includes a series of essays on topics in early jazz, biographical information on performers and ensembles, and literally hundreds of early jazz recordings available in streaming formats.
Porgy by DuBose Heyward
A hypertext copy of the novel that inspired Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, included as part of the web site of the Unversity of Virginia's American Studies Program. Follow the link to "hypertexts" for numerous full-text versions of important American documents and literature.

Web site of the current (and controversial) Broadway revival of Porgy & Bess (adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks [book] and Diedre L. Murray [music]).

The Aaron Copland Collection ca. 1900-1990
This online collection is part of the "American Memory" website, which itself is part of the Library of Congress's web site. Within this collection are such basic tools as a timeline of Copland's life and career, essyas related to his music, and access to PDF scans of sketches, autograph scores, letters, and other primary sources for Copland's music.
Copland House
Website of the foundation that maintains Copland's home, "Rock Hill" (north of New York City), as an historical site and center for the promotion of his music.

A streaming video performance (by T. Pascale) of Copland's first published work.

The official Leonard Bernstein web site, maintained by his estate, contains basic information on the life, career, and music of Bernstein. In particular, note the various works lists and onlin access to the complete run of Newsletters.

Local Concert Information

Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
As Central Florida's local professional symphony orchestra, the OPO performs a variety of concert series in and around Orlando. Follow the “Events” link on the home page to view the various concert series they present.
The Winter Park Bach Festival
The Winter Park Bach Festival is internationally known as the fourth oldest Bach Festival in the United States, having been founded in 1935 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach. This organization hosts a series of classical concerts throughout the year, as well as an extended Bach Festival in the early spring, on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park.

Local & Regional Broadcasting Information

WUCF-FM (89.9)
The web site of the University of Central Florida's own non-commercial radio station. Its programming is primariliy jazz, but WUCF also carries some NPR programming, a Sunday evening show on Bluegrass, and Saturday broadcasts of The Metropolitan Opera. WUCF-FM is available to you through the Internet to anyone with a Real Player Plug-in.
WUFT-FM (89.1)
The University of Florida's public radio station in Gainesville broadcasts a mix of classical, jazz, folk, and world music, as well as news and NPR programming 24-hours a day. WUFT-FM can be heard through the web link on their home page.


Web Sites for Downloadable Computer & Internet Tools

Real.com
Web site of "Real Player," one of the standard plug-ins that you might need to listen to web broadcasts and streaming audio, or to play CDs through your computer. The basic player can be downloaded at now cost from this site.
Windows Media
Web site of "Windows Media Player," another plug-in the is used for listening to web broadcasts, streaming audio and CDs.
Sibelius
Web site of one of the most widely used software packages for writing and printing music with computers. Various demo versions and upgrades are available for downloading, as is a help center for users.
Finale
The Web site of Coda Music, makers of the widely used Finale program for writing and printing music. A basic form of the program is available as a free download.
