Bach Fugue Analysis Assignment - Instructions
MATERIALS:
- Scores of Johann Sebastian Bach, Das Wohltempierte Clavier, 1. Teil, BWV 846-869 [The Well-Tempered Keyboard, Part 1]:
- Recordings of JS Bach, the WTC, Part 1:
- on Harpsichord - UCF Media: (CD) M 22 .B2 W6 1.T 2001 CD1/CD2

- Classical Music Library (UCF Library Streaming Database) - includes 6 different performances of the entire WTC
CHOICE OF FUGUE (REQUIRED): You must choose a fugue according to the following limitations:
- Only fugues from JS Bach's WTC, Part 1, (BWV 846-869), with one exception, may be used for the assignment.
- BWV 860 (# 28 in Schulenberg's Anthology, Fugue 15 in WTC, part 1) is not available for this assignment.
- Only one person may work on any one fugue, and choices are on a "first come" basis. (See the list below.)
- Submit your choices to me via email, and wait for my response. To save time, you may submit a list of your preferences in order.
OBJECTIVE: Utilizing your knowledge of Bach's fugal practice, you are to provide a detailed analysis of one fugue from J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Part 1., indicating or explaining the following points:
- The format of the first fugal exposition, including entrances of the subject, the answer, and the countersubject as appropriate.
- Whether Bach uses real or tonal answers.
- The location of episodes.
- The location and structure of any additional expositions.
- The (possible) use of inversion, retrograde, stretto and any other contrapuntal devices.
- The tonal plan of the fugue.
- You are not required to make any comments about the Prelude paired with the fugue.
FINALE FORMAT: Your final draft will meet the following criteria:
- A clearly marked, neat copy of the fugue that indicates all expositions (and entrances within), episodes, major cadences and any special contrapuntal devices.
- A written description of the fugue that explains the analysis in general terms, as well as highlights the most important aspects of the fugue. (minimum of 250 words.)
- (Optional): A chart (of your own devising) that indicates the major sections of the fugue, contents and key areas.NB. While a chart is not required, it may be very helpful to your analysis, and if a chart is included, the written description may be shortened.)
GRADING CRITERIA:
- First exposition description and analysis - 25%
- Key Areas and overall tonal plan - 25%
- Remaining expositions and episodes - 50%
