MUH 4361 / MUH 5365 – 19th-Century Music (Fall 2011) : Warfield
Robert Schumann, Dichterliebe (Graded Assignment)
For this assignment you are to study and investigate the song cycle Dichterliebe, op. 48, by Robert Schumann. In addition to the music itself, you will read one article and some other supporting materials about this song cycle, and you will then do two things:
- present a brief (5-minute maximum) overview of one song from the cycle (your choice) in class on 8 Feb 2011.
- write a paper that focuses on the cycle in general and your chosen song within the cycle in particular.
For this project you are to use the following materials:
- Robert Schumann, Dichterliebe, ed. Arthur Komar, Norton Critical Score (New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 1969). [2 copies on UCF Library Reserve; or (optional) puchase your own]
- Robert Schumann, Dichterliebe. [scores available in IMSLP]
- Dietrich Fischer-Diskau, "Schumann: Dichterliebe...." (UCF Library: Music CDR 9 [NB. This CD is not on reserve, so limit your use of this item as much as possible] or any of the streaming recordings in Classical Music Library [Access through UCF Library Databases])
- Rufus Hallmark, "The Sketches for Dichterliebe," 19th-Century Music 1, no. 2 (Nov. 1977): 110-136 (Access in JSTOR)
- Beate Julia Perrey, Schumann's Dichterliebe and Early Romantic Poetics [UCF Library Reserve]
- Richard Miller, Singing Schumann : An Interpretive Guide for Performers [UCF Library Reserve]
- Any sources of your own choice concerned with R. Schumann, the Lied in the 19th century, etc.
- Any sources of your own choice concerned with Heinrich Heine (Look especially in the UCF Library for "Heine" as both author and as a subject).
In your paper you should do the following:
- Provide a brief, general introduction to the song cycle Dichterliebe, R. Schumann as a composer of Lieder and related issues.
- Discuss the source of the poetry (and its poet) and also how Schumann chose and ordered these specific poems.
- Describe the general organization of the cycle, focusing of such aspects as the overall "story" and the shifting mood of the "narrator," and also provide some comments on how the music supports (or contradicts) these feelings.
- Describe one song (you choice, approved by me and indicated below) in detail, commenting on such matters as the placement of the song within the cycle, its poetry (and anything that Schumann might have done to the poem), and the details of its musical treatment.
- Provide a summary of your paper.
Type (word-process) your paper in the ususal format (1" margin on all edges, double-spaced, paragraphs indented, etc.) and submit it to me via email (as an attachment in WORD format only) by 5:00 pm on Monday, 28 February 2011.
Minimum acceptable length = 1000 words [undergrad] or 1250 words [graduate]. As always, you are encouraged to write more, if you feel the necessity to make your point.
Grading will be based on clarity of expression and correct usage (spelling, grammar, etc.) (40%), your discussion of the cycle in general and its background (30%), and your description/discussion of your chosen song (30%). For undergraduates (MUH 4361), this assignment counts for 10% of your course grade, and for graduate students (MUH 5365), this assignment counts for 15% of your course grade. NB. While the in-class presentation is not graded, failure to present on your chosen song (or a clearly unprepared presentation) will result in a 10-point reduction of your grade for the written paper.
