  1. IMPORTANT WARNING: No class meeting on Friday, 10 February 12. Us this time to meet on Group Analysis Projects. CLass meetings resume on Monday (13 February 2012).
  2. Reminder: We will return to Mozart's Piano Concertos (in Chapter 12), after covering his operatic works in Chapter 13.
  3. A partial Review sheet for Chapter 12 has been posted on the course web site. Please note that the "missing" sections on Mozart will be added after that materal is covered in a future class.
  4. All PowerPoint slides used to date have been posted on the course website.

6 FEB 2012 (M)

  1. For WEDNESDAY (8 FEB 12), continue reading Bonds, Chapter 13. Look especially at Mozart's operatic and other vocal music.
  2. Important Reminder: For the next class or so, we will cover aspects of WA Mozart's live and music that are not included (at least not in any detail) in your textbook. Do take good notes, and be aware of what is given on the daily PowerPoint slides.

  2. Make sure that you have looked at (and listened to) the three Haydn examples, Anthology items 104, 105 and 106.
  3. The ambitious may begin reading Bonds, Chapter 13, "Vocal Music in the Classical Era" (pp. 337-357).

  1. For FRIDAY (27 Jan 12), continue reading Bonds, Chapter 12, "Instrumental Music in the Classical Era" (pp. 314-336), and studying the associated Anthology items.
  2. Make sure that you have looked at (and listened to) the three Haydn examples, Anthology items 104, 105 and 106.
  3. Also, read Haydn's Biography (pp. 330-331 in the textbook). We will continue with this item on Friday.
  4. A Review Sheet for the "Chapter 11" has been posted on the course web site. Follow the link on the home page.

  1. For WEDNESDAY (25 Jan 12), start reading Bonds, Chapter 12, "Instrumental Music in the Classical Era" (pp. 314-336), and studying the associated Anthology items.
  2. If you have not yet done so, make sure that you have read the entire Bonds, Chapter 11, "The Art of the Natural" (pp. 298-313), as we should finish the last three anthology examples of that chapter in the near future.

20 JAN 2012 (F)

  1. For MONDAY (23 Jan 12), make sure that you have finished reading the entire Chapter 11, "The Art of the Natural" (pp. 298-313) in Bonds. Continue studying "sonata form," as we look at the remaining music examples in the Anthology.
  2. Also, for FRIDAY, make sure that you have looked over the first 5 items in the Anthology (including listening with the CDs), as we will finish with those items on Monday.
  3. All PowerPoint slides used to date have been posted on the course website.
  4. The ambitious may begin looking at Chapter 12, "Instrumental Music in the Classical Era" (Bonds, pp. 314-336).
  5. Another test email for the course mailing list will be sent to you on Friday (20 Jan 12) by 5:00 pm. Check your knightsmail account for it, and if you do not receive it, contact me to coorect your email address on the list.

  1. For FRIDAY (20 Jan 12), finish reading the entire Bonds, Chapter 11, "The Art of the Natural" (pp. 298-313). In particular, look at "sonata form," as we will emphasize that concept, both now and for a major project in a few weeks.
  2. Also, for FRIDAY, continue looking at the first 4-5 items in the Anthology (including listening with the CDs), as we will continue studying these examples as examples of "sonata form".

  1. FRIENDLY REMINDER: No class on Monday (16 Jan 12) due to MLK Holiday.
  2. IMPORTANT ALERT: I have established my own email list for this section of MUH 3212, and you should have received a test message of that list. If you did NOT receive that message, then either (a) I have made a typo with your email address, (2) you never sent me an email, or (3) you didn't use your "knightsmail" account. Regardless of the reason, correct your error (or notify me of mine) and get in touch with me immediately.
  3. The PowerPoint slide sets used in class this week (Mon, Wed, and Fri) have all been posted on the course website.
  4. Since we have finished coevering the Introduction to Part IV in Bonds, I have just now added a review page for that chapter. See the link on the course home page.
  5. For those who have just now acquired the texbook, read and study the "Prelude to Part IV" (pp. 288-297)
  6. For next WEDNESDAY (18 Jan 11), read the entire Bonds, Chapter 11, "The Art of the Natural" (pp. 298-313). In particular, look at "sonata form," as we will emphasize that concept, both now and for a major project in a few weeks.
  7. For next WEDNESDAY, also, begin looking at the first 2-3 items in the Anthology (including listening with the CDs), as we will study these after covering "sonata form".

  1. If you have not yet acted on the instructions to read the syllabus and send an email to me, you should do so ASAP. For the non-observant, attendance penalties are accruing. See the instructions under the 9 JAN 12 assignments.
  2. The PowerPoint slide sets used in class on Monday and Wednesday have been posted on the course website. For those who want these items for studying, you may download PowerPoint slides from that site. Remember that, generally, I will not post slides until a day or two after they are used in class. Also, for anyone who does not have access to PowerPoint, you can download a reader by following the links on the course web site.
  3. If you have (or just got) a book, you should read (or re-read) Bonds, "Prelude to Part IV" (pp. 288-297).
  4. For FRIDAY, start reading Bonds, Chapter 11, "The Art of the Natural" (pp. 2982-313).
  5. Anyone attending FMEA in Tampa should make sure that your group advisor includes your name on the list students attending that event. By doing so, you will be excused from that days's MUH 3212 class without penalty.

  2. Find the link to the course SYLLABUS on that page. READ the entire syllabus to make sure that you understand what this course entails, your obligations and my expectations.
