The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Final Exam). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.

NB. Because of the short time spent on this chapter, you need know only the materials referenced below and covered in class. Items in the book, but not mentioned below or on the PowerPoint slides will not be tested.

  1. In the 1970s, how is Black Pop Music related to Rock / Rock 'n Roll (or not)? What are the sources of Black Pop in the 1970s?
  2. How does Black Pop music change in the 1970s? What sorts of themes are common in the lyrics of this music, and why?
  3. What is "Funk", and how are bands like Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic important to the dissemination of that sound?
  4. How does Motown "mature" in the 1970s? Who are some of the most important individuals (performers and others) in this process, and what do they do?
  5. What is "Blaxploitation", and how it is relevant to Black music in the 1970s? Who are some important figures here?
  6. How does a TV show like "Soul Train" contribute to the general rise of Black pop and especially Funk?
  7. What is Disco, and how does it relate to Funk? What are some of the attitudes toward Disco? Who was the leading female singer of this style?
  8. For music examples, know by title, performer, and sound any item that has a Listening Guide in the textbook. NB. You do not need to know the song on pp. 392-93. You do not need to know any other songs for this chapter.
