The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Final Exam). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.

NB. Because of the short time spent on this chapter, you need know only the materials referenced below and covered in class. Items in the book, but not mentioned below or on the PowerPoint slides will not be tested.

  1. How do the 1970s relate to the 1960s? How are the values of the 1960s transformed in the 1970s?
  2. How does Rock music in the late 1960s/early 1970s relate to earlier styles?
  3. What is Covach's "Hippie Aesthetic", and what does it mean in terms of rock music in the 1970s?
  4. What are the chief influences on British Blues-based Rock bands in the 1970s? Who are some of the leading bands in style?
  5. What is "Southern Rock", and how does it relate to other styles of rock in the 1970s? Who are the some of the leading bands in this style?
  6. What is "Progessive Rock", and what are the aims of these sorts of bands? What sorts of influences can be heard in this music, and who are some of the leading bands in this style?
  7. What is "Glam Rock" (or "Rock Theater"), and what distinguishes this style of Rock?
  8. How do Jazz and Rock interact in the late 1960s/early 1970s? Who was the leading Jazz musician, whose sidemen created some of the first "Fusion" groups? What sorts of mixtures of rock and jazz were common, and what were "Horn" Bands?
  9. For music examples, know by title, performer, and sound any item that has a Listening Guide in the textbook. NB. You do not need to know the songs on pp. 324, 348-9 and 355. In addition to the reamining listening guides, you need know the following song: "Spinning Wheel" (Blood, Sweat & Tears).
