Review Sheet # 8 - Chapter 7
The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Test # 4). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.
Chapter 7
- What does the term psychedelia mean, especially in terms of the 1960s? How do the youth of that time view adults, and how does that affect their attitude toward adult values?
- What is "Higher Consciousness", what is its purpose, and how does one achieve it? Who were Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey, and what did they advocate?
- What is LSD, why might one use it, and what is the effect? What is the relationship of this drug to popular music of the era?
- How did psychedelia affect the making of popular records? How do records like Tomorrow Never Knows and "Good Vibrations" exemplify these new approaches and sounds?
- What is new and exceptional about songs like "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields", especially compared to earlier songs by the Beatles?
- Why is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band considered a landmark album? What are its contents, and what makes it a "concept album"? How is the packaging and marketing notable?
- What are some of the Beatles' later albums (know titles) and more important songs? What is notable about the subjects, lyrics, and recording techniques of these items?
- What is the Haight-Ashbury district, who lived there, and why is this relevant to psychedelic music? What were "hippies", and how were their values relevant to or influential on the popular music of the time?
- What is "acid rock", when and where did it originate, and who were some of the leading performers of this music?
- Know the names of the most important bands associated with psychedelia, especially including what the music of each band sounded like, any important soloists or leaders, the most important recordings, etc.
- How did London's psychedelic scene compare to those in the United States? As with the US, who were some of the leading British performers, what was most characteristic of each band's sound, etc.
- Who were the Doors and how was their music diferent from other psychedelic bands? How were Jim Morrison's lyrics different from those of other bands?
- How did bands like Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge compare to other psychedelic bands? What is important about their respective sounds and recordings?
- What were some of the more important pop music festivals of the late 1960s? How were they organized, and why might they have been important for some performers? What was significant or exceptional about the Woodstock Festival, and who were some of the more impotant performers who first attracted notice there? What is significant about the Altamont Festival?
- For music examples, know by title, performer, and sound any item that has a Listening Guide in the textbook. Additionally, know the following songs: "Penny Lane," "Strawberry Fields," "Piece of My Heart," "Light My Fire," and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida."
