Review Sheet # 6 - Chapter 5 & Interlude 2

The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Test # 3). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.


    Chapter 5

  1. What new styles of popular music emerged in the U.S. as a response to the "British Invasion"? What, especially, was Folk Rock?
  2. Who is Bob Dylan, what sort of music did he perform around 1960-64, and who were the primary influences upon him?
  3. How did Dylan's music change at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, and what was the audience and critical reaction to these changes? How did Dylan respond?
  4. Who were the Byrds and how were they influenced by Dylan and others? What is the sound of their music, and why are the Wrecking Crew and the 12-string guitar important to the sound of the Byrds?
  5. Who are some other important performers and groups who were successful and influential in the mixing of Folk and Rock sounds? Who, in particular, are Simon and Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas, and how do their respective musical styles relate to the folk rock sound?
  6. How did the sound of the Beach Boys change in the mid-1960s, and what did Brian Wilson's interests have to do with this change?
  7. How do bands like the Lovin' Spoonful and The Young Rascals fit into the musical styles of the 1960s? What are the chief influences on their respectives sounds?
  8. What were "Garage Bands", why were they given that name, and what does a "garage band" sound like? What was the most famous song by a garage band, and who were two of the more important "garage bands" from the Northwest U.S.?
  9. How was television important in the dissemination of various kinds of bands in the 1960s? What were some of the more important shows for youth-oriented music at that time?
  10. Who were TV-oriented performers like Sonny & Cher, The Partridge Family, and The Archies? What did these groups sound like (individually) and how were they received by audiences?
  11. Who were The Monkees, and how did this band come into existence? What was the original focus of this group, and what effect did that have on the initial sound of the group? What earlier music business practices are exemplified in the music created by The Monkees?
  12. For music examples, know by title, performer, and sound any item that has a Listening Guide in the textbook. Additionally, know the following songs: "Maggie's Farm" (Dylan), "Monday, Monday" (Mamas and the Papas), "Louie, Louie," "I Got You Babe" (Sonny & Cher), and "I Think I Love You" (Partridge Family).
  13. Interlude 2

  14. What are the three basic layers of most rock music? What is the purpose of each layer, and what instruments usually play in each?
  15. What is a drum set or drum kit, and what are the usual (minimum) instruments in such a set? What, in particular, is a high hat? What does the basic rock beat sound like (when are particular elements of the set used, which beats accented, etc.)? Who are a few of the most important drummers of the rock era?
  16. What is an electric bass guitar, and how does this instrument contribute to the sound of a rock or pop song? Who are a few of the most important basss players of the rock era?
  17. Know by sound "Funky Drummer", "Tear off the Roof" (alternately known as: "Give Up the Funk"), and "Smoke on the Water."
