Review Sheet # 3 - Chapter 2 & Interlude 1

The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Test # 2). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.


    Chapter 2

  1. What is the U.S. like in the 1950s? What is mean by “return to normalcy”? How does the rise of suburbia (Levittown and similar places) contribute to a “car culture” in 1950s? What do issues like Communism, the Nuclear age, and the conflict between the idealized world of “Father Knows Best” and the reality of 1950s create the context for Rock 'n Roll?
  2. Who (one or more individuals) were the first "rock ‘n roll” performers? How did the rise of a consumer-oriented youth culture contribute to the rise of “rock ‘n roll”? How does youthful “rebellion” contribute to the spread of "rock 'n roll" and its predecessors?
  3. How did regional radio broadcasting contribute to the rise of rock ‘n roll? Who were some of the most important DJs (disc jockeys) in this field? Who was Alan Freed, what did he do, and how did he contribute to the rise of rock ‘n roll?
  4. How do the various charts reflect the segmentation of the record market? What are “crossovers” and how do they contribute to the rise of rock ‘n roll?
  5. Who were some of the first crossover artists? What elements categorized their music as R ’n B, Country or Pop? What were some of the songs that define the first wave of Rock ‘n Roll?
  6. How did white performers contribute to the rise of Rock ‘n Roll? Who were some of the most important of these white "cover" performers?
  7. Who was Elvis Presley, what was his background, and how did he become a musician? What role did Sun Records and Sam Phillips play in this process? What were Presley's first recordings,and what where they like? How did they differ from other sorts of music at the time? Who was Colonel Tom Parker, and what role did he play in Presley's career? Why was Presley's contract sold to RCA, and what effect did that have on his music and career?
  8. What is "Rockabilly"< and who were some other White Rockabilly artists in the 1950s?
  9. How did the first wave of Rock ‘n Roll / Rockabilly come to an end? What specific events led to a decline in the genre? What is meant by the “Day the Music Died”?
  10. What was Payola, and how did that contribute to the decline of Rock 'n Roll? Who was Dick Clark, and how was he involved?
  11. Among other names, know especially the following performers, the style(s) associated with each, and any music examples (see the external links on the PowerPoint slides) shown or given in lectures: "Fats" Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Pat Boone. NB., These are not the only names you should know, but they are among the most important, especially as examples of specific styles. Know who these people were and why, and what their music sounds like.
  12. For music examples, know by title, performer, and sound any item that has a Listening Guide in the textbook. Additionally, know the following songs: "Maybelline," "Tutti Frutti," "Rock Around the Clock," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Great Balls of Fire," and "That'll Be the Day."

  14. What is mean by musical form, and what are the elements and techniques that create or determine form?
  15. What is the 12-Bar Blues Specifically, what is the pattern that this form represents? (Know it by sound.)
  16. What are Verse and Verse-Chorus forms?
  17. What is "song" form (AABA), and what is the "B" section often called?
