Review Sheet # 2 - Introduction and Chapter 1

The following concepts and terms in boldface (as well some not specifically listed, but indicated by these review questions) will be the basis of the materials on which you will be tested in the near future (Test # 1). Use your textbook, the PowerPoint slides, your notes and the links to any external web sites to find the information requested below. Remember that the "answers" are not always simple 1-2 word statements, but rather, may be more complex concepts.


    Introduction

  1. What is “Rock” music? Who makes and/or listens to this music? Can one define the “sound” of rock as one basic type of music?
  2. What are Covach’s “Four Themes”, and how does each help the scholar interpret this music?
  3. What is the “Popularity Arc” and what does it trace?
  4. What song or recording is often considered to be the "first” rock ‘n roll song? What performer/group recorded it? When and where?
  5. Chapter 1

  6. What is the general outline of major events in the 20th Century? NB. You will generally not be asked specific “date” questions, but you may be asked questions that involve general chronology (which came first).
  7. What are the three broad strains of music that pre-date and lead into rock ‘n roll? What are some of the basic traits that define each style in terms of both sound and attitude? Who is the audience for each type of music?
  8. What are some of the differences between regional and national audiences? What are some of the technologies, business practices, and social forces that transform audiences and markets in the 20th century?
  9. How did the invention of recording technology, radio and network broadcasting affect and influence various styles of music and their dissemination? What are clear channel stations, and how are they related to these issues?
  10. What is “Tin Pan Alley”? What does the music of this style sound like? What are its origins? How and to whom is it marketed?
  11. What is “Country” music? What does the music of this style sound like? What are its origins? How and to whom was it marketed? What is “Bluegrass” and how does it relate to this style? Why is Nashville important to this style of music, and what is the "Grand Ole Opry"?
  12. What is “Western” music? What does the music of this style sound like? What are its origins? How and to whom was it marketed? How does this style relate to “Country” music?
  13. What are the “Blues”? What does the music of this style sound like? What are its origins? How and to whom was it marketed? What is the difference between rural and urban blues (beyond simple location)? What are the “Chicago” or the “Electric” Blues? How doe these styles relate to one another?
  14. What significant technical advances are associated with Les Paul? What are overdubbing, multi-tracking, and the “chipmunk” sound? How is each made?
  15. Among other names, know especially the following performers, the style(s) associated with each, and any music examples (see the external links on the PowerPoint slides) shown or given in lectures: Roy Acuff, the Andrews Sisters, Gene Autry, the Carter Family, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Benny Goodman, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Louis Jordan, Glenn Miller, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Jimmie Rodgers, Bessie Smith, Joe Turner, Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, and Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. NB., These are not the only names you should know, but they are among the most important, especially as examples of specific styles. Know who these people were and why, and what their music sounds like.
