It remains the case that quizzes cannot be made up in this course. It is also the case, however, that it is possible to alleviate the problem of a low quiz grade or a missed quiz by instituting the following policy, consistent with the syllabus:
A lowest (or missing) quiz grade will be dropped from consideration in determining the total of quiz grades that constitute 20% of your grade for this course. So, if you missed the quiz on 9/18, that will be your one and ONLY dropped quiz grade. If you did not miss the quiz on 9/18, but are not pleased with your score, it will be dropped IF it is a lowest quiz grade - but again, only ONE low(est) or missing quiz grade will be dropped and IT REMAINS THE CASE THAT QUIZZES CANNOT BE MADE UP. If you miss two quizzes, or three, or four, or seven (whatever the number of quizzes are given throughout the semester), then all but one of your grades will count.
Some of you (fortunately, it is a small number) have a tendency to believe that after 1 hour, we're packing up and leaving. We're not. You may pack up and leave if you wish. You are not in high school anymore (to some of you, that seems not to be something you've realized yet). No one is chaining you to a seat. Remember, however, that quizzes may be given at any time (before a break, after a break, during the last 5 minutes of class, or during the first 5 minutes), and if you miss it FOR WHATEVER REASON, YOU CANNOT MAKE IT UP. Twenty percent of your grade may not seem like much. But if you have zeroes on all the quizzes, the highest grade you can possibly get in this course (assuming you get 100% on the mid-term and final examinations) is a "B". What are the chances, if you aren't here 2/3 of the time, that you will be able to do that???
Grades are based on numerical averages. They are not based on how hard you tried, or whether you have a rigid schedule playing checkers. It is your education. Make the most of it.
