Assume that the following claims are true:

 

  1. John will attend the party.
  2. If John attends, then Mary will not attend.
  3. Sharon will not attend and neither will Bob.
  4. Either Bob attends or David attends the party.
  5. If David attends, then neither Carol nor Elizabeth will leave early.

 

Based on the information in the five statements above, what can be said about the following?  Determine for each one whether it is necessarily true, or whether it could be true, or whether it cannot be true.  Provide a very brief explanation concerning how you reached your answer. Remember to keep a copy because it is possible that these will not be returned.

 

  1. If Carol leaves early, then Ann will not leave early.

 

 

  1. If Ann leaves early, then Carol does not leave early.

 

 

  1. If Bob does not attend, then David attends the party.

 

 

  1. David does not attend the party.

 

 

  1. Ed drank too much and slept on the couch.

 

 

  1. If Sharon attends, then Frank will take Carol to the bus station.

 

 

  1. If Mary attends, then John does not.

 

 

  1. If either Sharon or Bob attend the party, then George will arrive on time.

 

 

  1. George will not arrive on time.

 

 

  1. John and George are members of a national fraternity.
