The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest journalism organization, comprised of professionals and students from all media. Members are dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and to stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
While UCF’s SPJ chapter reactivated in August 2004, the national organization was founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi. Today, SPJ promotes the free flow of information in an accurate, timely and understandable manner; protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press; and educates the next generation of journalists.
Each member of SPJ abides by the code of ethics.
At the University of Central Florida, our chapter’s purpose is to not only assist students in securing journalism careers, but to enhance the university community by advocating the missions of the national organization of the Society of Professional Journalists:
1. To promote this flow of information.
2. To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press.
3. To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.
4. To foster excellence among journalists.
5. To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists.
6. To encourage diversity in journalism.
7. To be the pre-eminent, broad-based membership organization for journalists.
8. To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.
