Course Outline

PURPOSE: To understand the historical impact of world culture on Hollywood Films.  This course examines the influence of major cinematic & cultural events on Hollywood cinema including German Expressionism, Italian Neo-Realism, French New Wave, the Blacklist, etc.

FORMAT:Lectures, screenings and discussions of filmmaking techniques, principles and influences.

REQUIREMENTS: Three exams.   Students must provide a raspberry Scantron.

TEXT:There is no required text but “Understanding Movies” by Giannetti, “Screenplay” by Field”, Movie History” by Gomez are recommended.

GRADES: Grades are based on the following criteria:

Exam #1 -- 25 points
Exam #2 -- 25 points
Exam #3 -- 25 points
Exam #4 -- 25 points

The exams are multiple choice.  No incompletes will be given for this course. Students who miss exams or fail to put their PID on exams are penalized five points.  The only acceptable excuse for missing an exam is a death in the family.

Some films have adult themes and harsh language.  If this is a problem, see the instructor or your advisor.
