Resources & Search Engines:

EBSCOhost Image Collections (UCF subscription) - it's not in UCF's database list, but after you select almost any database from the list at EBSCOhost, the top of the screen should include a button for you to switch to the Image Collections database.  Includes photos of people, natural science photos, photos of places, historical photos, maps and flags.

Art Resources

Theatre Image Collections Online (WWW Virtual Library - Theatre & Drama) provides links to images of playbills, people, productions, sets, costumes, etc.

Digital Libraries & Full-Text Resources Online provides links to many resources that may include images, such as the Ringling Collection's Images of 19th Century Actors & Actresses.

American Memory (Library of Congress) provides images of photos and prints from many resources, including advertising, architecture, Civil War, North American Indians, daguerreotypes, environment & nature, theatre, music, etc.

NAIL - NARA Archival Information Locator provides access to a limited portion of the images available from the National Archives.  See also: Guide to the Holdings of the Still Pictures Branch of the National Archives [REF CD3027.S75 1990].

NASA Image eXchange (NIX) provides access to NASA's online image and photo collections.

Copyright-Free Photo Archive - The images found in this archive come from three main sources: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).

FreeFoto.com claims to be one of the largest collections of free photographs for non-commercial use on the Internet.

FreeStockPhotos.com provides free nature and Christian images.

Savetz's Unofficial Internet Public Domain Index is an index of public domain resources on the Internet, but the index is no longer maintained, so there may be broken links. 

Public Domain Pictures provides links to Web resources.

Picture Resources includes a subject directory of Web resources.

When Image is Everything (Searcher, January 2002 article by Nicolas G. Tomaiuolo) provides descriptive links, discussion of copyright issues, and helpful descriptions of file formats.

Locating Public Domain Images (College & Research Libraries News) provides descriptive links from a 1997 article.

Google Image Search claims to be is the most comprehensive on the Web, with more than 250 million images.

AltaVista Image Search allows you to restrict your search to photos, graphics, buttons/banners, color, or black & white.

FAST Multimedia Search allows you to restrict your search to images, video, audio, transparent backgrounds, jpeg, gif, bmp, color, gray, or line art.

Picsearch includes features in Advance Search mode to restrict searches regarding animations, color, black & white, or picture size.

Amazing Picture Machine says that "while we intend to index pictures of all types, the following topics are particularly well represented at this time: Aircraft, American Cities, Animals, Architecture, Astronomy Images, Civil War People, Places, and Things, Dinosaurs, Famous Actors and Actresses of the 20th Century, Famous 20th Century African-Americans, Gems and Minerals, Hubble Space Telescope Images, Maps of Continents and Countries, Maps of the 50 States, Military Equipment, National Parks and Monuments, Paintings and Famous Works of Art, Patterns and Shapes, Portraits and Photographs of 19th Century Writers, Presidents of the United States, Rock Musicians and Singers, Trees and Plants, Twentieth Century World Leaders, United States National Parks, Washington DC Monuments and Buildings, Weather and Meteorological Phenomenon, World War II.

Ditto.com provides visual access to the Web with nearly 6 million thumbnails selected and evaluated from over 115 million images.

Lycos Multimedia Search provides access to picture files that have your search term in the Web address, filename, or the HTML title. Includes indexing of audio and video files.

Ithaki Image & Photo Meta Search Engine finds images & pictures by searching simultaneously Ditto, Dino Cobion, Altavista Images, Fast Picture search, Lycos & Excite Photo finder.

ixquick Metasearch allows you to search for pictures simultaneously from Altavista, Art.com, and Fast Search.

BIG Search Engine Index - Image Search provides links to various search engines.

Images - Librarians' Index to the Internet identifies some other Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness.

There are many other printed resources in the UCF Library, but here are a few to get you started:

The Clip Art Book: a Compilation of More Than 5,000 Illustrations and Designs [REF NE3000.C556 1994] provides drawings, engravings, woodcuts and etchings of people, occupations, transport, leisure & sport, music, costume, heraldry & armour, ornaments & alphabets, architecture, anatomy & medicine, flowers, fruit, fungi, trees, animals, reptiles, birds, insects, fish and marine life.

The Picture Reference File: Volume 1, a Compendium [REF NK1530.P577 1976] provides 2,228 pictures of many periods, subdivided into 96 subject categories.

Classic Clip Art [REF NK1530.C57 1996] provides thousands of quality, copyright-free, clip-art images.

Harter's Picture Archive for Collage & Illustration: Over 300 19th-Century Cuts [REF NK1530.H37 1978]

Animals: a Picture Sourcebook [REF NC961.7.A54.A54] provides over 700 copyright-free illustrations for direct copying and reference.

Other Resources for Obtaining Images:

Prints & Photographs Reading Room (Library of Congress) provides a catalog with online access to about 50% of P&P holdings; many catalog records are accompanied by digital images, mostly thumbnails. Also provides guides and finding aids with overviews of collections and lists of images on popularly requested topics, many accompanied by digital images.

Photoduplication Service (Library of Congress) is a fee-for-service program responsible for copying and duplicating the Library's collections.

Photography Books Index: II: a Subject Guide to Photo Anthologies [REF TR199.M67 1985] and Photography Books Index [General Collection TR199.M67] identify by subject and photographer thousands of photographs contained in some of the most widely held photo anthologies, some of which are available in the UCF Library.

Photography Index: a Guide to Reproductions [REF TR199.P37] identifies by subject, title, and photographer the illustrations available in more than 80 major books and exhibition catalogs, some of which are available in the UCF Library.

Index to Illustrations of the Natural World: Where to Find Pictures of the Living Things of North America [REF QL151.T45] and Index to Illustrations of Living Things Outside North America: Where to Find Pictures of Flora and Fauna [REF QL46.M85] identify photographs, paintings and sketches found in 384 books, some of which are available in the UCF Library.

Picture Sources 3: Collections of Prints and Photographs in the U.S. and Canada [REF N4000.S7 1975]
