- Academic Index (WebLUIS database)
indexes articles in approximately 1000 scholarly journals and popular magazines in the
arts, humanities, social sciences, science and technology. Abstracts are included for some
articles. Provides access to ASCII full text
of some articles. Dates of coverage: 1982+
Another version of this database, Expanded Academic ASAP (1980+ ) available through InfoTrac,
allows you to limit your search to refereed journals and this version is updated daily and
may have entries and full text that is somewhat more current; some articles have charts
and illustrations not included in the WebLUIS version.
- America: History & Life
(ABC-CLIO) indexes over 2,000 international journals, books, and dissertations on the
history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present.
The electronic counterpart to the printed America: History and Life. Dates of coverage:
1964+
- Biography & Genealogy Master Index
(GaleNet database) is a comprehensive index to nearly 12 million biographical sketches in
more than 2700 volumes and editions of current and retrospective reference books, covering
both contemporary and historical figures throughout the world.
- Britannica Online (Encyclopedia
Britannica) - The online version of the encyclopedia includes maps, articles, and statistics on individual
countries, and weekly background articles for news and current events.
- Early American Periodicals covers
all known periodical publications that had their inception and ending from 1741 to 1935.
The full text of the actual periodicals are
in the UCF Library in three microfilm collections (often referred to as APS I, APS II and
APS III). The electronic index is incomplete but growing. You may find the CD-ROM
version available at a single computer in the Library's Electronic Reference Area easier
to use. The print index provides limited subject access to the complete series and is
shelved in the UCF Library's Reference Collection at REF AP2.A388. Nearly one hundred of
the periodicals in the APS II & APS III collections are at least partially indexed in Poole's
Index to Periodical Literature [Index AI3.P7] (1802-1906). Poole's
Index... was followed by International Index to Periodicals (1907-1965), Social
Sciences & Humanities Index (1965-1974), Social Sciences Index (1974- ),
and Humanities Index (1974- ). The last two indexes are available electronically
as FirstSearch databases: Social Sciences Abstracts (1983- ) and Humanities
Abstracts (1984- ). Humanities Abstracts abstracts and indexes
periodicals in archaeology, art, classics, film, folklore, journalism, linguistics, music,
the performing arts, philosophy, religion, world history, and world literature.
- EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite
provides abstracts and indexing for approximately 3,000 scholarly journals covering the
social sciences, humanities, education and more. Also offers full
text for over 1,000 journals including 380 journals dating back to 1990.
Includes coverage of over 1,700 peer-reviewed journals.
- HarpWeek: The Civil War Era and
Reconstruction I & II (1857-1880) provides full text, page image from original issues of Harper's Weekly.
- Historical Abstracts (ABC-CLIO)
abstracts and indexes literature covering countries other than the United States and
Canada in the subject areas of history, the social sciences and humanities. The scope of
coverage is World History (1450 - present) and related areas including culture, diplomacy,
economics, international relations and politics. Dates of coverage: 1954+
- History Resource Center: U.S.
(GaleNet database) contains approximately 100,000 pages of 500 primary documents with
corresponding facsimile pages. Other content includes more than 25,000 reference documents
from various Gale Group sources, magazine & newspaper coverage for more than 60
history-related full-text titles, and over 2,000 photographs & illustrations,
including 30 historical maps courtesy of Yale University. The earliest primary document in
the collection (as of 1/25/01) is The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
[1497-1504].
- JSTOR provides full text, page image from over 100 scholarly
journals, including 15 history journals, such as: American Historical Review
(1895-1995), Journal of Negro History (1916-1997), Journal of Southern
History (1935-1995), and William & Mary Quarterly (1892-1995).
- Universe databases: Congressional
Universe (CIS) gives researchers access to vast and varied information published
by and about Congress, including full text
of almost all Committee Reports from 1990 forward and Congressional testimony from 1988
forward, and indexing & abstracting from the CIS/Index to Publications of the U.S.
Congress from 1970 forward. Statistical Universe (CIS) provides the full
text of Statistical Abstract of the U. S., plus indexing and abstracts (with some
full text available) from American Statistics Index (ASI), Statistical
Reference Index (SRI), and Index to International Statistics (IIS). Academic
Universe (CIS/Lexis-Nexis) provides more than 9.5 million documents from over
18,300 sources, including access to company profiles and financial reports, government
transcripts, trade journals and academic and legal databases. Their files are updated with
full-text documents from general interest
wire services, newspapers, and magazines from around the world.
- WilsonSelect (FirstSearch
database) contains indexed and abstracted articles from periodicals, all with ASCII full text online. The database includes records
from the following H.W. Wilson databases: Readers' Guide Abstracts, Social Sciences
Abstracts, Humanities Abstracts, General Science Abstracts and Wilson Business Abstracts.
Dates of coverage: 1994+
- Women Writers Project provides
Pre-Victorian early modern women's writing. Currently has the electronic full text of over
200 texts from 1526 through 1833, a subset of which is Renaissance writers. The database
will continue to grow in the coming years.
