10 Ways to Recruit Team Members

Everyone on the team should help the team captain recruit new members. If you get too many members (more than 15) that’s great! You just formed a second team. The more people involved, the more fun your team will have and the more money you will raise in the fight against cancer. The following are some great tips on recruiting team members. Remember, the best way to ask them is in person.

  1. Send out a company-wide email asking for people to join in a fun and worthwhile event. If you are a bit daring, you could ask for 14 people who would like to spend the night with you–at the Relay For Life of course!
  2. Personally invite members from your company that have been personally touched by cancer. Participating in the Relay For life offers a great deal of healing. The event is special in its recognition of cancer survivors.
  3. Hold a lunch meeting to encourage people to get involved. Tell them why their participation is so important and let them know how much fun they will have at Relay For Life.
  4. Be enthusiastic and energetic about the Relay For Life and your involvement in the event. Enthusiasm is contagious.
  5. Put an article in your company newsletter encouraging people to sign up for your team.
  6. Choose an “honorary” team leader (maybe someone from your company), who is currently fighting cancer or has won the battle against cancer.
  7. Encourage family and friends to participate. The Relay For Life has a great family atmosphere.
  8. Hold your family reunion at the Relay For Life in honor or in memory of a family member that has battled cancer. Encourage your family members to raise funds and bring them to the reunion.
  9. Place Relay For Life posters in your office. Distribute brochures at work or put a flier in the paychecks asking people to get involved.
  10. Ask you neighbors. You could have a block sale as a team fundraiser.

Campsite Ideas

If your Relay For Life committee has chosen a theme for your event, decorate your campsite using that theme.

  1. Remission Possible – use the Mission Impossible theme
  2. Energizer Bunnies – a team that will keep going and going to fight cancer
  3. Kentucky Derby – decorate the campsite like the derby and sell Derby Pie’s and Jockey Brownies for team fundraising

  4. Mexican Fiesta Theme – spice up the fight against cancer
  5. Highway Department Theme – use signs that read “Cancer Cure Ahead,” “Yield to a Cure,” etc. Participants can wear reflective clothing and hard hats
  6. Wellness Chuck Wagon – have a big wagon filled with food and healthy eating brochures
  7. Realtors – “Curing Cancer is a Reality.” Team creates a house for their campsite. Bring in a real door for the entrance
