Background
Prior to his recent arrival at the University of Central Florida,
Professor Costain spent some twelve years working in radio and television
news. Much of that background involves work in radio news, where he was
a national anchor and reporter for a Canadian all-news network. At various
times during his career Professor Costain was a reporter, anchor and talk
show host. While working in radio and television he also served as both
a News Director and senior assignments editor. Most of his career was
spent in Canadian radio and television media.
Research
Professor Costain has a strong interest in journalism history, with some
of his scholarly efforts also focused on broadcasting policy. He wrote
his MA thesis at York University on the demise of the CKO radio network
(1989). Professor Costain considers himself a critical cultural scholar,
with a real interest in qualitative methods and the social history of
journalists.
"At its most lively and energetic, teaching can and should be democratic in nature. If classroom egalitarianism is valued above control, we should acknowledge that both student and the teacher learn during each encounter. As important for me is that students develop and sharpen their critical skills, while trying to abandon complacency for the virtues of learning."
