This course presumes a working knowledge of the history of Britain and its early Empire in the Americas and India, to around 1830 or so. If you do not have such a background, I strongly suggest that you acquire one. I have suggested one particular textbook below, but any good textbook or academic history of the empire will do.
Assignments:
Secondary Source Worksheet; also available as a Word .doc here.
Guidelines for leading discussion.
Book Review assignment, due June 16 and July 7.
Historiographic Essay guidelines. The final paper is due August 8 (Monday) by 6pm. Here are some ideas for finding topics.
Information on Style and Formatting:
A very basic Style Guide. You can also refer to the Chicago Manual of Style Quick Guide online, but these are not exhasutive; you will need to consult CMOS at the library.
