ENTERING UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

 

INSTRUMENT - Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP)
Freshman Survey. Developed by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA.

RESPONDENTS - A random sample of incoming first time in college freshman (FTIC)

PURPOSE - Collects demographic and attitudinal information on incoming FTIC students. Serves as a baseline for longitudinal follow-up. Measures trends and characteristics of college freshman.

USE OF DATA - Admissions and recruitment; academic program development and review; self-study and accreditation; public relations and development; institutional planning and assessment; retention studies; longitudinal research about the impacts of policies and programs.

INFORMATION COLLECTED - Demographic characteristics; expectations of the college experience; secondary school experiences; degree goals and career plans; college finances; attitudes, values, and life goals; reason for attending college.

ADMINISTRATION CYCLE AND AVAILABLE DATA - Annually at Fall orientation. Data Sets: 2000 and 2001.

INSTRUMENT - College Student Expectations Questionnaire (CSXQ)
Developed by the Center for Postsecondary Research and Planning (CPRP) at Indiana University

RESPONDENTS - A random sample of incoming first time in college freshman (FTIC).

PURPOSE - Assesses new students' expectations upon matriculation. Findings can be compared with student reports of their actual experiences as measured by the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ).

USE OF DATA - Comparisons with CSEQ data to identify areas where the first-year experience can be improved. Can be used in planning and assessment initiatives to improve students' first year of college to promote student engagement, persistence and learning.

INFORMATION COLLECTED - Background information; expectations for involvement in college activities and community service; predicted satisfaction with college; and expected nature of college learning environments such as expected use of institutional resources such as the library, computers and facilities, expected nature of experiences with faculty and course learning.

ADMINISTRATION CYCLE AND AVAILABLE DATA - Annually at Fall orientation. Data Sets: 2000 and 2001.
