Methods: Benefit Show…
Feminist Majority Foundation: Get Out HER Vote 2008Campaign to register voters “Currently, women hold a paltry 16 percent of the seats in the United States Congress and they make up 24 percent of the state legislatures. Only eight states have women governors, and we all know that the U.S. has yet to have a woman president or even a female nominee from a major political party. And as recently as 1992, women were only 2% of the U.S. Senate.
With women vastly under-represented in this arena, and glass ceilings still to be smashed, women’s rights advocates would be negligent not to try to correct such an imbalance.”
-NOW.org “Dragging Society Out of the Dark Ages: Elected Women Make a Difference”
Congratulations California! “In a 4-3 vote, the state’s highest court ruled that gay and lesbian couples should be granted legal rights to marriage. The case stems from a challenge in 2004, when history was first made by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Newsom had ordered the city to issue marriage licenses to thousands of same-sex couples, but the high court invalidated an estimated 4,000 marriages some six months later, because the legality of the underlying law had not been properly challenged. This case directly, and successfully, challenged the law that excluded same-sex couples from civil marriage. “
-NOW.org “California Supreme Court Rules Ban on Same-Sex Marriage Unconstitutional NOW Says Equal Treatment is Overdue”
Overturning of Gay Marriage Ban May Profoundly Impact November Elections
The California Supreme Court decision overturning state law banning gay marriage may have a profound impact on the state’s and nation’s November elections. Anti-gay rights activists have already submitted signatures for a ballot initiative to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage. The California Secretary of State is to expected to rule by the end of next month on whether or not the group’s petition gathered enough signatures, but the measure is expected to quality.
Even as gay-rights supporters celebrated the landmark Supreme Court decision, activists began gearing up for the political battle in November. “I wish we could simply celebrate and enjoy this incredible victory,” Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, wrote in an e-mail, according to the Union-Tribune. “But the truth is, this is just the beginning of the fight of our lives.”
