Is this the right
class for me?
Students often come to classes
without having a clear understanding of what might be expected of them in the
course in which they've enrolled. The following informal survey might give you
an idea of how compatible your interests are with this particular class.
On a piece of paper, number 1-10 and
then record your responses to the questions using the scale of 0 - 4 given
below.

1. I agree that regular and
punctual class attendance is a behavior expectable of adults and should be
considered in grading participation.
2. Because I recognize that
preparing assigned materials before class is essential to understanding what
happens in the class, I come to class prepared.
3. I don't mind working in groups
because it allows me to develop my ability to work with other human beings as
well as gain expertise in the subject matter and skill in verbal and
audio/visual presentation.
4. I have no trouble hearing
ideas about religion, cultural values and politics which might draw my own
ideas into question.
5. Because I recognize that
being able to write on a college level is an important skill, I don't mind
written assignments used to develop the ideas discussed in class.
6. I am comfortable using
web technologies as a part of my learning experience.
7. I recognize that being
able to think critically and creatively is an important result of a college
education and that might mean I may have to reconsider how I think.
8. Because I can learn from
my fellow students, being attentive and engaged in class discussions, even if I
do not personally contribute to them, is important.
9. I understand how
electronic devices including laptop computers capable of wireless email and
instant messaging generally distract students from fully engaging class and
thus the reason that many instructors ban them from class.
10. I agree that classes
which are demanding often prove to be those in which students learn the most.
NOW, add up your scores. Compare your final result
with the chart below. It should give you an idea of how compatible your
approach to college might be with this class.
