Getting Ready for the Job Market

Presented by: Dr. Ana M. Leon

January 18, 2006

Checking Your Emotions

Anxiety

Feelings of inadequacy

"But I don’t know enough"

"Did this program prepare me adequately?"

Rejection

Procrastination

Competition with others

Don’t Sell Yourself Short

Maintain a positive approach—not all jobs will be a good match for you

Recognize & highlight your skills, strengths, & assets

Don’t take the first job offer unless it’s your "dream job"

Know what your limitations are—"we can’t be all things to all clients"

What Do I Need to Think About?

What kind of work are you looking for?

What population?

What intervention methods and modalities?

What type of agency?

Where-geographically?

Financials

What salary range are you looking for?

What must I make to survive financially?

What is my bottom line?

Am you willing to trade salary because there are other perks? (supervision, training, good benefits, etc.)

The Resume

How do you start preparing your resume?

Start on it—don’t wait until the last minute

Keep it to 1 page if possible

Highlight your skills and abilities

Describe what you have done briefly

Keep the format and style professional

Remember the importance of the cover letter-distinguish yourself from the "pack"

Getting Ready for the Interview

Dress

What to take with you on the interview day

Remember your professionalism

Be on time!

Don’t "bad mouth" previous employers, jobs, etc.

Prepare ahead of time

After the Interview

Immediately send a "thank you" note—not by email.

Follow whatever they told you about when you would hear back from them—don’t call and nag

Control your anxiety

Be prepared if they make you an offer
