Lesson 5: "Why Am I Always Sad?": A lesson about childhood depression

Procedures:

  1. Divide the classroom into several groups of three or four students. When the students are not using the computer, they may read, visit another center, or do other work at the discrimination of the teacher.
  2. Have the students from each group, in turn, visit the computer center and access the curriculum page, "Childhood Depression".
  3. Ask the students to answer the questions on the curriculum page as a group by visiting the web sites, reading, and locating the answers. They should record their answers on paper.

 

Evaluation:

  1. After each group has completed the assignment, perhaps over a few days, have the groups share their findings with the rest of the class. Discuss what they have learned about the topic of depression.

 

Have the students write a journal entry about depression. Possible topics are as follows. Have you known someone who seemed depressed? Explain. Have you ever been depressed? Explain. In the future, if you become depressed or have a friend who is depressed, what should you do?
