What is Cancer?
The American Cancer Society defines Cancer as "a group of many related diseases. All forms of cancer involve out-of-control growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer is classified by the part of the body in which it began, and by the appearance under a microscope. Different types of cancer vary in their rates of growth, patterns of spread, and responses to various types of treatment. That's why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their specific form of cancer".

The September 1996 issue of Scientific American devoted its entire issue to What You Need to Know About Cancer. The authors ask "What exactly do you need to know?" The authors give two main facts: "First, that many cancers are highly preventable. Second, that the ability of medicine to detect and treat cancer, though still far from ideal, has progressed enough for patients to face their illness with greater optimism". The authors hope "that readers will come away from this issue with a greater sense that, armed with knowledge and courage, they can fight back against this disease". It's a must read for anyone interested in or dealing with cancer issues. The magazine won the Winner of the National Magazine Award for this issue!
