The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization governed by a 63-member board of directors whose goal is to improve student learning by strengthening teaching. The NBPTS has established high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The NBPTS has developed a national, voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards and to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning in American schools. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification process takes a full school year to complete and requires intense self-reflection and analysis of one's practice. Those teachers who successfully complete the certification process meet high and rigorous standards, demonstrating excellence in teaching practices. The NBPTS certificate identifies and recognizes teachers who effectively enhance student learning and demonstrate the high level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and commitments reflected in the following five core propositions:
- Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
- Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
- Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
- Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
- Teachers are members of learning communities.
