Creative Writing

Current Projects

For the past few years, I have been writing about people’s relationships with their homes, trying to get at issues of physical comfort, materiality v. materialism, and how our homes’ mental and physical spaces interact. My main focus recently has been about a family and house in Massachusetts (which has made on-site research a challenge). That story has grown to involve a small-time mobster’s history in the house, as well as the hoarding of some current family members and the youngest family member’s efforts to restore it. Click here for a few photos.

I’ve also been involved with a collaborative, interdisciplinary group that does online ethnography about Florida folk artists. See the Folkvine website. http://www.folkvine.org/

Sweet Invisible Body: Reflections on a Life with Diabetes [link to amazon.com]

“… a vivid and often beautifully written account of the realities of diabetes.” –Paula Kamen, Chicago Tribune

“Roney … has transformed into art the story of an existence constricted by chronic illness. … brutally honest” –Publisher’s Weekly

“Courageous, obstinate, poetic…” –Kirkus Reviews

“You must read "Sweet Invisible Body" by Lisa Roney, if you haven't already. It is exactly the kind of book I want to write. Describes the emotional aspects of being diabetic, as well as giving accurate descriptions of how a low or high blood sugar feels. I have read this book countless times. I highly recommend it. … [Other books] pale in comparison with Roney's book.” –Kerri Morrone, co-editor of Exist Magazine [http://www.existmag.com/]
