UCF Library Electronic Science Subscriptions

The list of Science Databases has been expanded and moved to a separate page.

NOTE:The subscriptions are available only to current UCF Students, Staff and Faculty. Most work only from a UCF IP address (for off-campus access, see Getting a SLIP/PPP Connection to Your Computer). Databases on WebLUIS or FirstSearch can be accessed with a valid UCF ID. Others which may be reached from off-campus IPs require special access information which you must obtain from the Electronic Journals, Magazines and Newspapers page.

Tips for searching the UCF Catalog on LUIS

  1. See the LUIS instruction pages for information on commands.

  2. You can search either the old LUIS or WebLUIS. LUIS is text-only and can be reached by dialing up directly, or by using tn3270 software . WebLUIS allows you to search LUIS from the web interface without using special software.

  3. Search for videos by adding and fmt=vid to your subject or keyword search.

  4. Browse by call number by typing cl= and then the beginning of a call number (the first part of the number defines the subject, the last part is for the specific book). There are several ways you can get ideas for call numbers to browse:

    • You can do a keyword or title search to find a book that you like and then use the first part of its call number for browsing. For example, suppose that you know that we have a book called Natural products: their chemistry and biological significance. A search of LUIS tells you that its call number is QD415 .N365 1994. To find other books on a similar subject, type cl=qd415.

    • Or, if you are curious enough you might want to look at the Library of Congress' Classification Outline. These categories may be too broad, but the list may give you some ideas of other call number areas to consider.

      • Generally, most mainstream chemistry books are classed in QD. Interdisciplinary areas to check may be:

        • QC Physics
        • QH Natural history (includes biology)
        • QK Botany
        • QP Physiology (includes Animal biochemistry and Experimental pharmacology)
        • R Medicine (includes Toxicology, Pharmacology, etc.)
        • S Agriculture (includes agricultural chemistry and physics)
        • SB Plant culture (includes Treatment and control of diseases and pests, in other words, pesticides)
        • TD Environmental technology. Sanitary engineering
        • TP Chemical technology
