STOUT, I. JACK

I am interested in population and community-level phenomena in ecosystems of peninsular Florida. Work with small mammals has focused on community structure, dispersal strategies, and habitat selection. Effects of habitat fragmentation on the biota of sand pine scrub and sandhill communities have been examined. Intense land development pressures in these xeric pinelands have resulted in studies to assess the merits of relocating gopher tortoises from development sites to public and private lands. Other research concerns long-term studies of the pigmy fringe tree, scrub lupine, and the gopher tortoise. Recent work has involved restoration of forested fresh water wetlands. My students are encouraged to do manipulative field experiments.
