The familial tomb of Eurysaces
the baker, near the Porta Maggiore in Rome. This reflects my interest
in Latin epigraphy (the study of tombstone inscriptions), especially those
that concern the collegia, collective institutions that, on occasion, contributed
to or paid for the burial of individuals. This was the subject of
my dissertation, and of papers presented
at conferences and in the Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik.

A poster advertising the ‘Mostra
Augustea della Romanità,’ an exhibit mounted by the Italian Fascist
regime in 1937/8. This reflects my interest in modern interpretations,
and especially in misinterpretations, of the classical experience.
I have published on this topic in the International Journal of the Classical
Tradition, and this is the main theme of my book manuscript, tentatively
entitled The Roman Collegia: The Modern Evolution of an Ancient Concept.

A bronze statuette of a female
athlete. This reflects my interest in ancient sport, particularly
in its connections with issues of gender and sexuality. I have published
on this subject in Nikephoros, a journal devoted to the history of classical
athletics. |
