311: The Journey from Nebraska
It's time once again for UCF's annual homecoming celebration. This
year, as part of "UCF Homecoming 2001: Knightmare
the
tradition continues!" rock group 311 will be performing October
18 at the UCF arena.
The group has begun touring in support of their latest album - From
Chaos, released in summer 2001 - and will follow up with dates
in Canada, Europe and Japan. This is the band's sixth album on their
major record label, Capricorn Records.
The guys of 311 officially formed their existence in 1991, as all
members originally grew up and began to jam in Omaha, Nebraska.
Once they realized the gem they had created, their Midwest lives
became too small for them and they packed up and headed to every
musician's utopia, Los Angeles. After releasing a few unsuccessful
releases on their own independent label, the band finally got signed
to Capricorn Records.

The big break for the group came in July of 1995 when they released
their third CD, 311, and their single, "Down,"
went to No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart in 1996. The follow-up
hit off of the same album, "All Mixed Up," landed a spot
at No. 2. Since then, the 311 album has gone triple platinum, their
1997 album Transistor has reached platinum, and they have
toured extensively to tens of thousands of fans per night in Europe,
the U.K., Australila, New Zealand, and Japan.
These alternative rockers have made a name for themselves amongst
the pop acts of the world by blending their unique musical influences
into one distinctive brand of hoppin' music. All members of the
band cite a variety of musical tastes, including reggae, punk, jazz,
and even retro and disco. No matter what type of music 311 incorporates
into their tunes, however, they always give it their all. Guitarist
Tim Mahoney adds, "We have always focused on making music.
Music of all kinds inspires us, [and] positive mental attitude has
always been a goal of ours. We play music from our hearts for life
and hope it affects people in a positive way."
311 are composed of Nick Hexum on lead vocals and guitar, Douglas
"S.A." Martinez - vocalist and mix-master of the turntables
- guitarist Tim Mahoney, Chad Sexton regulating drums and percussion,
and "P-Nut" (a.k.a. Aaron Wills) on the bass guitar.
