For Margaret Murphy-Reed, painting and praying are similar activities. Her art represents both spiritual and personal reflections of an image or idea that interests her. She draws from nature as an exercise in discovering the intimate feelings hidden behind images she sees. Night Wind is one work in a set of two paintings that is the result of this continuous search. She found in the sky, clouds and ocean of Key West a melted vision divided only by the horizon. She has favored and developed an abstract approach to painting throughout her career. Murphy-Reed started painting early in her childhood and has never stopped. Her first exposure to painting was through her mother's eldest sister, a painter, who encouraged her to contemplate and enjoy nature, discovering the communion between the spiritual and natural worlds.
Murphy-Reeds growing interest in art has led her to explore various techniques and themes. She likes creating dark mystical works with black and white graphite where she uses her hand to apply the graphite directly onto the surface. She also enjoys making personalized visual books.
Murphy-Reed has made painting, and art in general, a way of life where she can explore, not only forms and shapes, but also her personal and intimate relationship to them.
