In this, her second exhibition, Martha Johnson presents Sunshine, Maitland Art Center. The artists great interest in light and shadow is evident in this work which captures the play of sunlight and shadow on the surface of the Maitland Art Centers building.
Johnson started painting four years ago, and now this activity has become an obsession. She shares her love for outdoor painting with four friends, who for the past two years have made Central Florida their favorite location to paint. Together, they look for the perfect spot to paint and spend long days enjoying this activity. They also encourage and support one another, criticizing each others work, always looking for ways to improve. It was the encouragement of her friends that motivated Johnson to submit this painting for this exhibition. She states, "We were thrilled when my painting was accepted."
Painting outdoors has given Johnson the opportunity to create a special bond with her environment. She says, "It is hard for me to leave a place after spending long hours there; it becomes part of me." It is this bond that makes Johnsons work personal. Her sensitivity to her surroundings and the friendship and support she shares with her friends fill her life with enjoyable days of artistic camaraderie.
