When asked about the beginnings of her artistic activity, Marie L. Delaney says, "I really haven’t started...About five years ago, I wanted to do something for me. I wanted to have a calming experience, something that I could lose myself in." Inspired by color, movement and beauty, painting seemed to be the logical choice.

The subject of this painting is taken from a photograph of a vacation scene in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut. Delaney chose this image because of the warm memory it brings to her. Part of art’s purpose, according to Delaney, is its ability to transport the viewer. "Art allows you to picture yourself in the scene, in that place," she says.

Although Delaney finds personal gratification in her painting, she maintains that it doesn’t have a great impact in her life: "I don’t have a driving desire. I do this just for me. I could move on to something else anytime."
