Community Oriented Policing Unit:
The Community Oriented Policing Unit (COP) was established in 1997. The COP officers are assigned to work in various communities throughout the entire University of Central Florida Campus. The COP officers will strive to reduce crime rates through a community-police "Partnership" of trust, respect, caring and helping people find the underlying causes of crime in their communities, while working together in a team effort to make the campus a safer place. The COP unit consists of five officers supervised by the Crime Prevention supervisor. All of the officers are IPMBA (International Police Mountain Bike Association) certified, and they utilize their police mountain bikes as their primary mode of transportation in their areas, however, they do have a fully marked police car which they use as well. The COP officers also have offices located in their communities, this gives the community an opportunity to get to know the officers on a one to one basis.
The COP officers do various programs for their communities. Some of these programs consist of Fake ID identification for businesses on campus, Operation ID which is a program where people have their personal possessions engraved with their driver's license number, Crime watcher program, both alcohol and drug awareness programs and Bike safety/laws programs. The officers whose communities consist of the resident halls work closely with the resident assistants so that the students, who are living on campus, can directly benefit from the COP officers who are working in those communities.
