What is Critical Theory's concern with race?

In a word: Representation. If race is not "out there" in some biological or ontological sense (and it seems clear that it is not), and yet we seem to still talk meaningfully about it, what are we discussing? Its representations. Race exists in the sense that it is a meaningful part of discourse, not in the sense that it refers to something in the world.
