In Quebec, there is a long-standing history of cultural and national identification. Part of this comes out of having a distinct language to the rest of Canada. This has led many to believe that Quebec can only find its national identity as a separate entity.
But they are not the only ones to assert this. All over the world there are separatist movements and national movements. In Spain, Basque separatism is a long-standing political force. Yugoslavia underwent a bitter war, and now no longer exists as a country. Chechnya, currently part of Russia, has tried to secede, and been brutally put down for it.
